Lakes Region

Fishing, Fishing, Fishing, Fishing, Fishing

Western Kentucky known as the Lakes Region in the state is rich with outdoor recreation opportunities.  Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park, Kenlake State Resort Park, Barkley Lake State Resort Park, and Mineral Mounds State Park are some of the finest in the Kentucky State Park system.  Each of these parks are home to golf courses that will challenge the most avid golfer.  Land between the Lakes (LBL) offers fishing, hunting, hiking, nature study, camping, mountain biking and miscellaneous programs.  The lakes provide swimming, fishing, skiing, and pleasure boating opportunities.

Municipal recreational facilities are operated by the cities of Benton, Calvert City, Hardin and Marshall County. Tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball/softball and soccer fields are available in Benton, Calvert City, Draffenville, and Hardin parks. Kenlake State park also hosts an indoor tennis facility.

There are many community festivals that are celebrated throughout the year, such as the American Quilters Show, Barbeque on the River, Tater Day, Ameribration Celebration, Pisgah Bay Drag Boat Racing, Hot August Blues Festival, Paducah Summer Festival, Freedomfest, Aurora Country Festival, Cadiz Ham Festival.

If you are interested in seeing the superstars of college and professional basketball of tomorrow, they will play at Hoopfest.  USA Today reported Marshall County High School's Reed Condor Memorial Gymnasium as one the best six in the nation for watching high school basketball.  It is a sell out seating of 6,000.  If division 1A basketball is more to your taste, Ohio Valley Champions Murray State University is within 25 miles.

Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Black Crappie, White Crappie, Bluegill, White Bass, Rockfish “Striper”, and Catfish will keep your line tight and your stringers full.  Maybe that is why Kentucky Lake hosts so many fishing tournaments which include the Wal-mart FLW Tour and Crappie USA Tournament.  As a matter of fact FLW Outdoors is headquartered jsut a few miles from Sassyland.
